Now Introducing Redken!

November 22nd, 2014

After meeting with many different color lines and much deliberation between our hair team we have decided to completely change over our entire color line to Redken! We strive to bring the best possible services and brands to our clients always, this also went into our decsion process when we chose Redken.

Redken was first developed in 1960, and founded on wanting to provide education about the chemistry of hair and skin to professional hair dressers to give a gentle yet high performing product for clients. Redken pioneered adding science to beauty services, with their protein technology (since hair is mostly made up of protein) had them recognized as one of the Icons of the American Market Place. Another break through Redken had for the color industry was when they introduced their Shades Equalizing Color Glosses in the 1980s. This technology has become the number one ammonia free, non-lift, semi-color that can be used on it’s own our combined with there color for more coverage.  Color Fusion is a modern take on permanent color that delivers healthy, dimensional haircolor. With more than 100 shades in 6 categories. This cream based color can be used to lighten, darken, match natural hair, or cover gray.

We officially changed over our salon Mid-October, and our stylists and customers couldn’t be happier! Our stylist love the creativity it allows them to have as well as the constant support given by Redken in continued education on new techniques and formulas. This has been an exciting change for the Bella Gia Team! Come out and try our new favorite color line for yourself!

A The Basic Guide to Retinols

November 12th, 2014

One of the most popular trends in the skin care industry right now is retinols. As wonderful as retinol products can be many people either over use them too quickly or are too afraid to use them at all. Here is a quick and simple guide to the basic need to knows before starting to use retinols in your skin care routine.

First off Retinol is a chemical compound of vitamin A, that through independent research was proven to visibly reduce the signs of aging and acne.

When it comes to aging, retinol stimulates new skin cell production and strengthen the fibers that help skin stay firm. By improving these aspects of skin, retinols are able reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and discoloration. As far as Acne, retinol helps slow down oil production and fade scars and pigmentation that can be left behind from acne break outs.

When you first start using retinol products you want to slowly introduce the products to your regular routine. On many occasions we recommend starting off with the product once a week for a month,  then slowly add it in to twice or three times a week for a month, then every other day for a month. If your skin starts to get irritated or over stimulated at any of these phases go back to the previous step and contact your esthetician.

Like always you should consult with your esthetician first before you introduce any active products, like retinol to your skin care regimen.

Here at Bella Gia we have two amazing products that contain .05% pure retinol, intensive age refine and intensive clarity from PCA (physician’s care alliance), as well as retinal boosters that are a great way to enhance your facials.

Still Getting Break Outs and Don’t Know Why?

November 4th, 2014

Are you following your home care regimen and faithfully following your product routine and still getting break outs? In addition to getting regular facials at our day spa here are a few little tips to help you out!

Wash your make-up brushes!

In brushes that have not been cleaned it’s an easy place for bacteria to grow and multiply when this happens you are spreading the growing bacteria all over your skin every time you use the brush. In return you will continue to have break outs and blemishes despite your skin care routine.  Depending on how often you apply make up and the manufacturer of your brushes you would clean them either weekly or monthly. (if you apply a full face of make up daily clean your brushes every week, but if you only apply make up every few days you can wait longer to clean them)

There are many types of brush cleaning sprays you can purchase and use or if you are looking for items around the house, shampoo or using a gentle dish soap with a drop of olive oil is a great option as well. After washing them reshape the bristles and allow to sit over night to dry!

Skip fabric-softener with pillow cases!

Try washing your sheets and pillow cases more often first, but if that doesn’t work try skipping the fabric-softener. Fabric-softener basically adds a coding over the fabric which can be irritating your skin while sleeping! Try out this tip especially if you are having break outs specifically on the side of your face you tend to have against the sheets.

Wipe down your phones screen!

Especially now that cell phones never leave our sides they collect all types of dirt, debris, oils from our finger tips, and bacteria. Make sure you clean your phone frequently so none of that will spread to your skin.

It’s not just about making sure your skin is clean but making sure everything that touches your skin is clean too! Especially if you have break-out prone skin take the extra precautions 🙂

Brazilian Blowout Treatment

October 29th, 2014

Working at a salon I get tons of phone calls about the Brazilian Blowout treatment for their hair. Clients want to know, what is it? Will it damage my hair?  What if my hair is colored?  So I have decided to blog the answers to all these questions and then some 🙂

What is a Brazilian Blowout?

Through the use of innovative and breakthrough bonding technologies, these treatments actually improve the health and condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle.
They start by washing your hair multiple times using the Brazilian Blowout shampoo followed by apply the solution to each section of hair. Next, they dry and flat iron the hair to lock in the treatment. Once that’s complete they wash your hair again and flatiron one more time. The end result is smooth, healthy, frizz-free hair with radiant shine!

Who is the best candidate for a Brazilian Blowout?

The Brazilian Blowout is effective on all hair types; thick, thin, dry, chemically damaged, blondes, brunettes, straight and/or curly.

Can I still receive a Brazilian Blowout with colored or highlighted hair?

The answer is YES! The BB actually improves the health of color treated hair. BB conditions the hair and seals the cuticle for enhanced color, leaving it shiny and frizz free.

How long will the Brazilian Blowout treatment last?

The Brazilian Blowout will last for 10-12 weeks if the Açai After-Care Maintenance product line is used. The Brazilian Blowout is a cumulative treatment, in that the more you receive it, the healthier the hair will be and the longer the result will last.

I hope this answers some if not all of your questions about the Brazilian Blowout treatment. Call Bella Gia Salon and Spa today to try one out! 619.297.7601

Tip & Tricks For Before Waxing

October 25th, 2014

Here are some tips for before your waxing services!

1. Hair should at least be a 1/4 of an inch long before waxing.

2. Exfoliate before your appointment to loosen up the dead skin cells and any “trapped” hairs. If you have time it’s always to do it the day of the appointment, if not the day before is good as well.

3. Consider Taking Tylenol or Advil 45 mins before your appointment. Especially if it’s in a particularly sensitive area or you know that you have a lower pain tolerance. Be careful not to take medications like Motrin before your appointment, because those are blood thinners.

4. Stop Using products like Retin-A, Differin, Tazorac, or Highly concentrated AHA’s a week before your appoint. (If on Accutane or similar products stay clear of waxing for at least a year)

5. Try not to shave between waxes! If there are some stray hairs that bother you then tweeze the area before using a razor.

6. Do not apply any moisturizers, oils, or lotions after showering and immediately heading to your appointment. The oils in the product will prevent the wax from adhering to the hairs.

7. For Female Clients: During the menstral cycle the feeling of pain is more intense so make sure to time your appointments around your cycle.

Bonus Tips:

Avoid the sun for 48 hours after waxing, the skin of that area will be extra sensitive and more likely to sun burn.

To prevent ingrown hairs exfoliate regularly between waxing appointments to prevent any dead skin build up to block in the hairs when growing out.

Changing Your Skin Care with The Seasons

October 22nd, 2014

Just as the weather and leafs change while we transition into the fall months, so should our skin care routine. The weather has a huge influences on the way our skin reacts. In the hot summer months most will be on the more oily side needing gel based cleansers and lighter moisturizers and serums to keep them balanced. However as we head into fall weather can be more dry and cool, influencing the skin in the opposite direction than summer. Also recovering the skin from any damage from the summer’s extreme conditions like over sun exposure.

1. Don’t Forget About Sunscreen

Many people put sunscreen on the back burner during the Autumn and Winter months.or Without the heat of the sun being a constant remainder to re-apply and also spending more time in doors it can slip our minds. The Sun is the number one reason for aging in the skin. Specifically the UVA rays which penetrate past glass and cloudy gloomy days. So always remember to stay protected!

2. More “Emollient” Moisturizers

The cooler weather and lack of moisture in the air can be very drying on skin. Definitely for dry and combination skin it’s time to purchase a heavier moisturizer and not be afraid of products that are not completely “oil-free”. If you tend to be on the oily side or acne prone you may need to change up your moisturizer as well depending on the level of oil produced by your skin this is something that should be consulted with your esthetician before changing.

*Now is also good time to invest in a good hand cream and body cream

3. Recover From Any Sun Damage

After all the Summer out door activities there’s a chance you may have some minor sun damage that can now be fixed with the help of your esthetician. By adding pigment suppressing and antioxidant rich serums into your routine along with exfoliation will make a major difference in sun damaged skin especially when combined with professional treatments.

Even in California where the weather is known for being sunny it’s always a good idea to transition your skin to even the most subtle climate changes.

Like always when concerned about your skin consult with a licensed esthetician.

Why Buy Salon Recommened Shampoos and Conditioners?

October 20th, 2014

It happens to everyone when they go to a salon to get their hair done, the stylists recommends a “pricey” shampoo and conditioner.  The one thought that always came to my mind was ” why pay $30 each for a shampoo and conditioner when my head and shoulders is $10 total?!?” After working at a salon and having numbers hair stylists as friends, I now know why it’s important for me to spend that extra money to get a better quality shampoo/conditioner. I made the switch to Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner and it has made the world of a difference!

Here’s what I learned:

Pureology products are all highly concentrated and have NO sulfate. This means that I don’t have to use very much product, a little goes a long ways! The bottle seems small but lasts for a while. Using a shampoo with no sulfate is probably going to be one of the best decisions you make for your hair. Sulfate is essentially used to make the shampoo thicker and lather up in the shower, it also causes frizziness and is damaging to color treated hair. Why spend all that money coloring your hair to just ruin it with your shampoo?!?!

All Pureology products have an  AntiFadeComplex®
Our exclusive blend of potent antioxidants and full spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreens, including Heliogenol and Vitamins C and E, defend hair against free radical damage to help optimize colour retention and protect from harsh environmental factors. Who doesn’t want to protect their hair?

All the products are Vegan, meaning no ingredient of animal origin. Save the animals 🙂

All in all spending the extra $20 or so is SO worth it to maintain healthy hair! Check with your salon or come visit us to pick up your new Pureology products!

Exfoliation (Manual & Chemical)

October 12th, 2014

Old dead skin cells like to stick around, giving our skin a dry and dull appearance, with proper exfoliation skin can feel smoother, look radiant, and improve the over all health of your skin. Both Manual and Chemical exfoliation can be truly beneficial to all skin types and conditions not only does it improve the skin on it’s own but enhances the other products used afterwards allowing serums and hydrators to penetrate deeper and improving the skin to another level without the barrier of dead skin blocking the product penetration.

Manual exfoliation is when an actual scrub or brush is used to remove the dead skin cells. Examples of manual exfoliation would be, sea salt scrubs, sugar scrubs, microdermabrasion, or  dry brushing. Chemical exfoliation is when an enzyme, alpha-hydroxy (AHA) or beta-hydroxy (BHA) acid is used to remove the dead skin cells. Examples of chemical exfoliation would be, glycolic acid, lactic acid, salysilic acid, or fruit enzymes. Of course there are many others and the possibilities are endless.

There is the possibility of over exfoliating and stripping the skin so consult with your esthetician to find out what would be best for you, depending on skin type and what treatments you are currently under going.

At Bella Gia we offer chemical peels, microdermabrasion, body scrubs and sell a variety of different at home exfoliant options!
